Crowds

The short version

A surf town on the open Pacific where winter storm-watching is a marketed season in its own right — people book oceanfront rooms in January specifically to watch the weather arrive

What the walking is like

Boardwalk rainforest trails and long beach walks. No guide needed.

When not to come

Treating the water as swimmable without a wetsuit. The Pacific here is 12–14°C in August; everyone surfing is in neoprene, all year.

Busiest

Summer, and the long weekends through it

With children

Long Beach is enormous and flat, though sneaker waves make the water’s edge a real hazard and the cold limits swimming. It is a five-hour drive or a short flight from Victoria, and the road in is winding.

Where to stay

Tofino’s oceanfront lodges are the expensive draw. Ucluelet at the other end of the park is a working town, cheaper, and has arguably the better clifftop walking.

What can go wrong

Winter storms

Storm season is a booking category here rather than a warning — people come for it. The road in still closes for slides.Jan · Feb · Mar · Oct · Nov · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Pacific Rim Whale Festival (Mar) — grey whales migrating past
  • Storm-watching season (Nov–Feb), which is a booking category here
  • Black bear viewing on the inlets (Apr–Oct) — tours go at low tide, which matters more than the month

Walks

  • Rainforest Trail — boardwalks through old-growth cedar and hemlock, short and extraordinary
  • Wild Pacific Trail, Ucluelet — clifftop path above the surf, with the lighthouse loop
  • Nuu-chah-nulth and the beach walks — miles of hard sand between headlands at low tide

This is temperate rainforest and it rains around 3,300mm a year — waterproofs are not optional in any month. The West Coast Trail further south is a serious multi-day permit hike, a different proposition entirely.
