Crowds

The short version

Three parks in one — temperate rainforest, wild coast and an alpine ridge — and they are far enough apart that trying to do all three from one base is mostly driving

What the walking is like

Day walks from the road in three separate areas, plus longer backcountry if you want it. No guide needed.

When not to come

Arriving at the Hoh Rainforest after 8am in summer. The lot is small, rangers meter the entrance, and the queue forms before you reach the trail. Check a tide table before the tide pools too — at high tide the beach narrows to nothing.

Busiest

July and August, August the peak — and the Hoh keeps reduced hours outside summer

With children

Long distances between the three hubs, and tide timing on the coastal walks. The Hall of Mosses is short and ideal.

Where to stay

Port Angeles is the practical base for Hurricane Ridge; Forks and Kalaloch put you at the rainforest and the coast. Pick one hub per day rather than chaining all three.

Dates that matter

  • Peak season July–August, the driest stretch
  • Grey whale migration past the coast (Mar–May)
  • Lowest spring tides — the best tide-pooling of the year

Walks

  • Hall of Mosses, Hoh Rainforest — short, and unlike anywhere else
  • Hurricane Ridge — alpine meadows; in winter the road opens Friday to Sunday only, chains required
  • Rialto Beach to Hole-in-the-Wall — only passable around low tide

The wilderness coast alone runs 73 miles, most of it walkable only with a tide table in hand.
