Fairbanks is at its best for northern lights in February to March and September to October. Good but not prime in January and November.

No reliable monthly crowd data for this destination — the proxy used elsewhere did not pass its checks here, so nothing is shown rather than a guess.

Sits under the auroral oval in a dry continental interior, which is the combination that matters — the Geophysical Institute runs the season from 21 August to 21 April and rates spring clear-sky odds at about twice autumn’s. It is also brutally cold: a January mean low near −27°C, and −30°C often enough to plan for
Day walks on open ridges and river trails. No guide needed; the mosquitoes decide where you go.
22 April to 20 August for aurora — Explore Fairbanks gives the season as 21 August to 21 April, so an early-August trip still meets a sky that is too bright. Late April and early May are also break-up: mud, closed trails and very little happening.
March for the winter peak, and June for the busiest month of all
The cold is the real constraint — aurora viewing means standing outside in deep cold for hours. Most operators run heated cabins or yurts for exactly this reason, and those are worth paying for with children.
Chena Hot Springs, an hour and a half to two hours out of town, is the classic combination — dark sky, a heated pool to wait in, and no city light. Book it as a stay rather than a day trip and you get the whole night.
Deep cold and very short days. Flights and roads are reliable; standing outside is the hard part.Jan · Feb · Mar · Nov · Dec
Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.
Summer here has almost no darkness and a short intense season. Mosquitoes in June and July are not a joke and shape where people walk.
