Churchill is at its best for northern lights in January to March and September. Good but not prime in October, November and December. Crowds peak in December and bottom out in April.

The short version

Three separate reasons to come, and they barely overlap — beluga whales from June to August, polar bears in October and November as they wait for Hudson Bay to freeze, and the aurora on clear winter nights. Turn up in the wrong month and the thing you came for may not be here

When not to come

April and early May, and September. The bay ice is going or coming, and the bears are out on it or dispersed inland. The wildlife is different rather than absent — spring migration brings 250-plus Arctic species to the estuary.

Busiest

October to mid-November, when the bear-viewing season compresses into about six weeks and only eighteen tundra vehicles are licensed

With children

There is no road in — access is by air or a two-day train from Winnipeg, and that shapes the whole trip. Tundra vehicle days are long and cold with no way to leave early.

Where to stay

Bear season accommodation sells out roughly a year ahead and prices reflect it. July belugas are a fraction of the cost for arguably the better wildlife encounter — you can snorkel with them — but boats and beds book up fast.

What can go wrong

Polar winter

Extreme cold with wind chill well below −40°C, and no road in — everything arrives by rail or air.Jan · Feb · Mar · Nov · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Beluga season in the Churchill River (Jul–early Aug) — thousands of whales
  • Polar bear season on the coast (Oct–Nov, best mid-Oct to mid-Nov)
  • Aurora season (Jan–Mar, and again late Aug–Sep)
