The Window

Every place has a window — the two to four months it is actually at its best. Some of them are famous. Some of them are nowhere near when everybody turns up. Every other week we take one apart.

Big Sur’s window opens in September. Most people arrive in July, when it scores 29.

Big Sur's coastline scores 90 in September and October, and 29 in July. July is also when the crowd reaches its highest point of the year — 100 on this coast's own scale, against 16 in October.

July is not the worst month here. December is, at 0, and January at 2, because Highway 1 shuts. July is something more ordinary and more avoidable: summer on this coast is fog, and it sits on the water all day.

Crowd figures here are a Wikipedia proxy (Monterey, California), not counted visitors — but the index and the hand-written note agree, both saying July–August. Where the two disagree, the note wins and no crowd claim is made.
