Lake Tahoe is at its best for swimming in August. Good but not prime in July and September. Crowds peak in July and bottom out in November.

Two seasons with an unreliable gap between them. Palisades Tahoe ran to 24 May in 2026 and has called a season off in March in a bad snow year, so April is a gamble rather than a dead month — and the high trails often hold snow into July. Desolation Wilderness permits run year-round.
Day walks from lake level up to the ridges, reliably snow-free from July. No guide needed.
Mid-May to mid-June. The ski season is over and the high trails are still under snow, though the waterfalls are at peak melt.
July through September, plus the Christmas–New Year and February ski holidays
Altitude at around 1,900m, and trailhead lots that fill by 9am. Beaches and ski schools are otherwise excellent.
South Lake Tahoe’s casino strip is the busiest and priciest. Tahoma and Kings Beach cost less, and Truckee — which has the train and the best food — is the one locals suggest.
The Rim Trail circles the entire lake, and almost every west-shore trailhead feeds into it.
