The short version

Freshwater with no salt, no sharks and no tide, backed by 140m sand dunes — and it only works for about ten weeks, because Lake Michigan does not warm up until July

What the walking is like

Dune and bluff walks on sand, steep, hot and more strenuous than they look. No guide needed.

When not to come

Expecting comfortable swimming at all — July averages under 19°C. The lake is around 6°C in May — cold enough for cold-water shock — and reaches a swimmable 20–22°C only in late July and August.

Busiest

July and August, worst in the middle of the day

With children

Easy, and the dune climb is a genuine highlight for children. The Dune Climb descent to the lake is a serious 45-minute slog back up that people underestimate every day.

Where to stay

Traverse City is the base with the restaurants and the airport. Glen Arbor and Empire are tiny, right at the park, and book out well ahead for August.

What can go wrong

Winter storms

Lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan closes the scenic drive and most of the park road for the winter.Jan · Feb · Mar · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • National Cherry Festival, Traverse City (early Jul)
  • Peak fall colour (early–mid Oct)
  • Lake Michigan at its warmest (Aug) — still under 20°C

Walks

  • Empire Bluff Trail — 45 minutes to the best view of the dunes and the lake
  • Pyramid Point — a short climb to a bluff 90m above the water
  • Sleeping Bear Point Trail — 4.5km of dune and ghost forest. NPS warns of desert-like heat off the sand: hat, sun cream, water

Everything here is short, sandy and steeper than it looks. The Dune Climb itself is not a trail to the water — that descent takes minutes and the return takes an hour.
