HikingCity & Culture

Petra & Wadi Rum is at its best for city & culture in March to April and October to November. Good but not prime in February, May and December.

The short version

Spring and autumn only, really — summer in the desert is around 30°C with no shade in the siq, and winter nights in Wadi Rum drop near freezing. March to May and September to November are when both the ruins and the desert are comfortable

What the walking is like

Long day walks on uneven rock in full sun, with a lot of steps. No guide needed on Petra’s main trail; off it a local guide is required.

When not to come

June to September. The heat is punishing on the longer Petra trails, and the desert camps are unpleasant. Winter rain can be heavy enough to flood the siq, which closes it.

Busiest

Easter and October, when tour groups cluster

With children

Petra involves a lot of walking on uneven ground in sun — the Monastery is 800 steps. Wadi Rum camps are basic and cold at night outside summer.

Where to stay

Wadi Musa is the town beside Petra and exists entirely for it. A night in a Wadi Rum camp is the other half of the trip — book one with proper bedding if you are going outside summer, because the cold is the usual complaint.

What can go wrong

Flash floods

The Siq is a slot canyon and it floods. The site closes when rain is forecast, occasionally with people inside.Jan · Feb · Dec

Extreme heat

Wadi Rum and the Petra approach have no shade; midsummer afternoons are genuinely dangerous.Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Petra by Night (Sun–Thu evenings) — the siq lit by candles
  • Spring wildflowers in the Petra hills (Mar–Apr)
  • Ramadan — moves annually; opening hours and transport change

Walks

  • The Monastery, Ad Deir — around 850 rock-cut steps above the main site, and worth every one
  • Al-Khubtha to the High Place of Sacrifice — the view down onto the Treasury
  • Wadi Rum canyons and Jebel Umm ad Dami — Jordan’s highest point, a half-day with a guide

Petra is far bigger than the Treasury photograph suggests — two days minimum to walk it properly, and the back trails are empty even in peak season.
