Chiang Mai is at its best for city & culture in November to January. Good but not prime in February and October.

The short version

November into early February is the window. February into late April is burning season, when farmers clear fields across the north and the valley traps the smoke — Chiang Mai has repeatedly ranked as the most polluted city in the world during it

What the walking is like

Day walks and village-to-village treks, usually with a local guide.

When not to come

February through April. Burning season, with air quality well into the hazardous band — the single clearest ‘do not come now’ on this list.

Busiest

November for the lantern festivals, then the cool season

With children

Burning season is worse for small lungs — February to April is a genuine reason to pick different dates when travelling with children.

Where to stay

The Old City is walkable and cheap; Nimmanhaemin has the cafés and the co-working at a premium. Either way, check a live air-quality reading before booking anything between February and April.

What can go wrong

Air quality

Burning season. Farmers clear fields across the north and the valley traps the smoke — Chiang Mai has repeatedly ranked as the most polluted city in the world during it.Feb · Mar · Apr

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Yi Peng and Loy Krathong lantern festivals (November) — the reason November books out
  • Songkran (13–15 April) — Thai new year
  • Burning season (late Feb–Apr) — not an event, but it belongs on the calendar

Walks

  • Doi Inthanon — Thailand’s highest point; the Kew Mae Pan trail below it is closed June–October
  • Doi Suthep and the Monk’s Trail — a forest path up to the temple above the city
  • Mon Jam ridge and the Mae Sa valley waterfalls

The hills north of the city are full of village-to-village walking, most of it done with a guide rather than on a marked trail.
