Oman is at its best for city & culture in November to February. Good but not prime in March and October.

The short version

October to April is the season, at 17–35°C. June to September is genuinely too hot to tour — except in Salalah, where the khareef monsoon turns the southern mountains green and cool from late June

What the walking is like

Day walks in wadis and on the Jebel plateau. A 4WD for anything remote, and a guide is advisable rather than required.

When not to come

May–September anywhere except Salalah. Over 40°C and humid on the coast; the wadis and mountain roads stop being enjoyable.

Busiest

The northern winter, and European school holidays

With children

Heat, and wadi walks that involve swimming through narrow slots — wadis flash-flood after rain between October and March. The desert camps are a real adventure for older children.

Where to stay

Muscat’s beach resorts price like the rest of the Gulf. The mountain camps on Jebel Akhdar and the desert camps in the Wahiba cost less and are the actual reason to come.

What can go wrong

Extreme heat

Over 40°C and humid on the coast. Touring stops being enjoyable — except in Salalah, where the khareef monsoon keeps the southern mountains at 25°C.Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Turtle nesting at Ras al Jinz (May–Sep, peaking Jul–Aug) — turtles appear year-round
  • Khareef season in Salalah (Jun–Sep) — monsoon fog, green mountains, high twenties
  • Muscat Nights, the rebranded Muscat Festival — winter, with dates announced each year

Walks

  • Jebel Shams balcony walk — a ledge path above Wadi Ghul, Oman’s canyon
  • Wadi Shab — a walk that ends in a swim through a slot to a hidden cave
  • Jebel Akhdar village terraces — rose fields and abandoned stone villages

The Hajar mountains hold a marked long-distance trail network that almost nobody walks. The wadis are the easy introduction to it.
