Kerala is at its best for lakes & coastline in November to February. Good but not prime in March and October.

The short version

December–February is the dry window and the reason to come in the northern winter; the June–September monsoon is the cheapest, greenest stretch and the season Kerala markets for Ayurveda treatment

What the walking is like

Easy half-day walks in the tea hills. No guide needed on the tea-estate paths.

When not to come

Expecting dry weather June–September. The monsoon is genuinely worth coming for, but not if you booked it thinking it would be sunny.

Busiest

December, peaking hard over the holidays

With children

Minimal — backwaters, beaches and elephants land well. Heat and slow road transfers between the coast and the hills are the real constraints.

Where to stay

The houseboat is the draw and the markup. One night on the water plus nights in a Kumarakom homestay costs far less than a multi-day charter, and you sleep better.

What can go wrong

Monsoon

The south-west monsoon. Worth coming for on purpose — it is the traditional Ayurveda season — but not if you booked expecting sun.Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Onam (August, date varies) — the state festival, with the snake-boat races
  • Peak houseboat season (Oct–Mar) — book the boat well ahead
  • Monsoon Ayurveda season (Jun–Sep) — clinics consider this the best treatment window

Walks

  • Munnar tea estate trails — Kolukkumalai and the ridges above the plantations
  • Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary — guided walks, elephants, no self-guided wandering
  • Chembra Peak, Wayanad — the heart-shaped lake climb, permit required

The Western Ghats run the length of the state. Munnar and Wayanad are the two hill bases nearly every walking trip uses.
