The one American city where the weather barely matters and the calendar entirely does — but late September and October are genuinely the best of it, and December is the most expensive month of the year
July and August if you plan to walk the city. It is humid, the subway platforms are brutal, and a good number of restaurants close for the holidays.
Thanksgiving through New Year above all, though occupancy barely drops from March to December
Everything is close together and the subway is quick, but it is loud, crowded and mostly stairs. Museum-and-park days work far better than sightseeing marches.
Midtown is convenient and characterless. Downtown and Brooklyn — Williamsburg, Cobble Hill — cost less and are better places to wake up, with a twenty-minute subway ride to everything.
