The short version

Gros Morne is on the west coast and not on Iceberg Alley — the bergs run down the Labrador, northeast and east coasts, best in late May and early June. What Gros Morne has instead is a long season: the visitor centres and Lobster Cove Head lighthouse run 15 May to 12 October, campgrounds 22 May to 28 September, and Green Point stays open year-round on self-registration.

What the walking is like

Coastal and mountain day walks on exposed terrain. No guide needed; check seasonal closures.

When not to come

Coming for icebergs in August. The season runs roughly April to early July, best late May into early June, and varies year to year — there is a live iceberg tracker locals check daily.

Busiest

July and August. The season is much wider: the visitor centres and lighthouse run 15 May to 12 October, so late May, June and September are open and quiet.

With children

Long drives between everything on an island the size of Cuba, and the weather changes hourly. The boat tours — icebergs, whales, the Western Brook fjord — carry children well.

Where to stay

Rocky Harbour is the practical base for Gros Morne. Norris Point is prettier and smaller; Corner Brook has the services and the airport is at Deer Lake — book everything early, the supply is genuinely thin.

What can go wrong

Winter storms

Most of the west coast closes outright, and flights into Deer Lake cancel often enough to need slack.Jan · Feb · Mar · Apr · Nov · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Iceberg season (May–early Jul, tracked live and variable)
  • Puffin and seabird colonies at Elliston and Witless Bay (Jun–Aug)
  • Humpback whales feeding inshore (Jun–Aug)

Walks

  • Gros Morne Mountain — a scree slog to the top of the Long Range, a serious full day
  • Western Brook Pond — a flat boardwalk approach to a boat trip up a landlocked fjord
  • Tablelands — walking on exposed mantle rock from the Earth’s interior, orange and barren

The Gros Morne summit trail closes 1 May to late June for nesting ptarmigan, arctic hare and caribou — a calendar closure, not a weather one, and enforced. Weather here turns fast: fog, wind and rain in any month.
