The short version

The dry season is the northeast monsoon, from January to March. The southwest monsoon brings the wet season from mid-May to November, and December and April are the changeover months

When not to come

Counting on calm seas from mid-May to November. This is the southwest monsoon, the wet season, and the Met service issues rough-weather warnings at sea.

Busiest

December is the busiest month of the year, and May and June the quietest

With children

March, April and the first half of May are the warmest weeks of the year, until the monsoon arrives in mid-May.

Where to stay

Trips start and end in Malé. Maafushi, Gulhi and Guraidhoo are local islands with guesthouses, south of the capital in Kaafu Atoll.

What can go wrong

Monsoon

The southwest monsoon, the wet season, runs from mid-May to November.Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep · Oct · Nov

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Some trips go out to Dhigurah, in Ari Atoll, to snorkel with whale sharks and manta rays
  • A bodu beru drumming performance on a fishing island, on some trips

Know before you book

Most places have one or two months that are genuinely better — and a booking moment that comes a lot earlier than the trip. I’ll write when one of those is coming up. No schedule, no filler.
