Two hours apart and best in the same months — Late March into early April, when the azaleas are out and the humidity has not arrived, and again in late October
July and August — heat, humidity and mosquitoes together, plus hurricane season building. Savannah’s St Patrick’s Day is one of the largest in the country and the city is unrecognisable that week.

Both cities are flat, walkable and full of horse-drawn carriages and ghost tours, which children tend to like. The summer heat is the real limit.
Historic downtown in both is the point and the price. Charleston’s Upper King and Savannah’s Starland District are cheaper and better for eating; the beach towns — Folly, Sullivan’s, Tybee — are twenty minutes out.
