The short version

The second-largest dark-sky preserve in Canada and one of the largest anywhere, three hours north of Banff and far quieter. The aurora does reach this far south on an active night — the planetarium here puts it at roughly once a week — but this is not Yellowknife, and nothing in the Rockies is

What the walking is like

Alpine and canyon day walks. No guide needed, bear spray sensible.

When not to come

Assuming it is unaffected by the 2024 wildfire — parts of the townsite and surrounding forest burned, and some trails and businesses are still recovering. Check current status before booking.

Busiest

July and August, though never at Banff’s intensity

With children

Quieter and more spread out than Banff, with the same gondola-and-lakeshore ease. Wildlife on the roads is constant and genuinely hazardous at dawn and dusk.

Where to stay

The townsite is small and books out; Hinton is an hour east and much cheaper. Check what has reopened after the 2024 fire before committing to anything specific.

What can go wrong

Wildfire risk

The 2024 fire burned into the townsite itself. Smoke closes the Icefields Parkway in bad years even when the fire is elsewhere.Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep

Avalanche risk

Backcountry terrain and the parkway.Jan · Feb · Mar

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Jasper Dark Sky Festival (Oct)
  • Maligne Canyon ice walks (Jan–Mar)
  • Elk rut around the townsite (Sep)

Walks

  • Valley of the Five Lakes — five lakes of different colours in a moderate 5km loop
  • Maligne Canyon — a limestone slot you cross on bridges, and an ice walk in winter
  • Wilcox Pass — above the Columbia Icefield, with bighorn sheep and the best glacier view without walking on ice

The Icefields Parkway between here and Lake Louise is the drive, not just the route — allow a full day. Bear spray is standard, and the aurora season means the walking season and the dark-sky season barely overlap.
