The only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States, and an American beach destination whose season is the northern winter — summer is hot, wet and hurricane-prone
September and October — peak hurricane risk, and the one stretch where a booked trip can simply not happen. Also spring break in Key West, and the July lobster sport season, if that is not what you came for.

The water is warm, shallow and calm, and the reef snorkelling works for children. The drive down from Miami is three to four hours on a two-lane road with nowhere to overtake.
Key West is the name and the price. Islamorada and Marathon are halfway down, far cheaper, and closer to the best reef diving — and Big Pine has the deer and almost nobody.
