Banff & Lake Louise is at its best for skiing in January to March. Good but not prime in April and December. Crowds peak in July and bottom out in November.

The short version

The turquoise of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake comes from glacial rock flour and only appears once the ice melts out — the lakes thaw from late May, and Moraine Lake road is closed to private cars entirely

What the walking is like

Alpine day walks with teahouses and gondola access. No guide needed; bear rules apply.

When not to come

Driving to Moraine Lake — you cannot. Private vehicles are banned on Moraine Lake Road; it is shuttle, bus or bike only, and the shuttles sell out. Lake Louise itself still takes cars. Also expect Lake Louise only just ice-free in late May, and Moraine still frozen into June.

Busiest

July and August, when most of the Moraine Lake shuttle seats go in a single spring release

With children

Townsite Banff is easy and the gondolas do the climbing. This is grizzly country with seasonal trail restrictions requiring groups of four, and winter is properly cold.

Where to stay

Banff townsite and the Chateau at Lake Louise are the expensive options. Canmore is twenty minutes outside the park gate, cheaper, and has better restaurants — and you avoid the park pass on non-park days.

What can go wrong

Avalanche risk

The Icefields Parkway closes for control work, and backcountry travel needs the daily bulletin.Jan · Feb · Mar · Dec

Winter storms

The Trans-Canada through the pass closes in heavy snow.Jan · Feb · Mar · Nov · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Larch turn in Larch Valley (roughly mid–late Sep)
  • Ice bubbles at Abraham Lake (Jan–Feb) — 190km and 3 hours out, outside the park
  • Banff Mountain Film Festival (Oct–Nov)

Walks

  • Plain of Six Glaciers — from Lake Louise up the valley to a teahouse under the icefall
  • Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass — the best two weeks of the year are here in late September
  • Johnston Canyon — catwalks bolted into a limestone gorge, easy and extremely popular

Parks Canada imposes group-of-four minimums on some trails for bear safety, and enforces them. The larch turn in Larch Valley is roughly the third week of September and is the single busiest hiking week of the year.
