Hiking

Annapurna & Pokhara is at its best for hiking in March to April and October to November. Good but not prime in January, February, May and December.

The short version

Spring and autumn are the trekking seasons: rhododendrons in spring, and the clearest skies after the monsoon in October and November

What the walking is like

Treks of a few days to a week or more from Pokhara, through villages such as Ghandruk. The Annapurna Conservation Area charges an entry fee, and the permit is issued by the NTNC. Nepal’s permit and guide rules change, so check the current requirements with your trekking company.

When not to come

June to September, the monsoon. About 80% of Nepal’s rain falls in these four months.

Busiest

October and November, then March to May — the two trekking seasons

With children

Winter nights in the hills can drop below freezing, though the days are bright and clear. Pack for both.

Where to stay

Pokhara is the base for these treks, and many Nepal trips that come here also spend nights in Kathmandu and Chitwan.

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Know before you book

Most places have one or two months that are genuinely better — and a booking moment that comes a lot earlier than the trip. I’ll write when one of those is coming up. No schedule, no filler.
