Crowds

Swipe the table sideways for the rest of the year.

primegoodpossibleoff-seasoncrowds, on this place’s own scale

The short version

Granite mountains that come straight down to the Atlantic, with 45 miles of carriage roads closed to cars — and a short season, though Bar Harbor itself keeps shops, lodging and restaurants open year-round

What the walking is like

Granite day walks, some with iron rungs and real exposure, plus graded carriage roads. No guide needed.

When not to come

Cadillac Mountain at sunrise without a vehicle reservation — they are required in season and sell out. And the ocean, realistically: Maine water sits around 14°C even in August.

Busiest

July and August, plus the cruise-ship days in September and October

With children

The carriage roads are perfect for bikes and pushchairs. The Precipice and Beehive trails are iron-rung climbs on cliffs and are not for children — or for anyone uneasy with exposure.

Where to stay

Bar Harbor is walkable and expensive in season. Southwest Harbor and the quiet side of the island cost less, and Ellsworth is half an hour inland for much less again.

What can go wrong

Winter storms

The Park Loop Road closes for winter and most of Bar Harbor shuts from November to April.Jan · Feb · Mar · Nov · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Peregrine nesting closures on the Precipice, Jordan Cliffs and Valley Cove — from 1 March until the park judges it safe
  • Peak fall colour (early–mid Oct)
  • Bar Harbor cruise season (Sep–Oct) — the town fills on ship days

Walks

  • Beehive Loop — iron rungs and ladders up a cliff face, short, and more exposed than its length suggests
  • Jordan Pond to Bubble Rock — flat lakeside boardwalk, then a short climb to the balancing boulder
  • Cadillac South Ridge — the long way up the highest point on the US Atlantic coast, mostly open granite

Precipice, Jordan Cliffs and Valley Cove close for peregrine nesting, early March into summer, enforced. Beehive and the other rung-and-ladder trails are dangerous when wet. The carriage roads are the alternative and are lovely.
