WildlifeHiking

Masai Mara is at its best for hiking in July to September. Good but not prime in June and October.

The short version

The northern half of the same migration — the herds arrive from the Serengeti in June and July and stay until the short rains push them back in November. Resident lion, leopard and cheetah are here all year regardless

What the walking is like

Guided only, and mostly in the conservancies — a walk inside the reserve needs an armed ranger.

When not to come

March to May, the long rains. Black-cotton soil that traps vehicles, and the herds are still in Tanzania.

Busiest

July and August, when the crossings and the European summer collide — and December, which is Kenya’s third peak

With children

The conservancies are generally easier with children than the national reserve — fewer vehicles, shorter drives, and lodges used to families. Balloon flights usually set a minimum age and a very early start.

Where to stay

The private conservancies bordering the reserve cap vehicle numbers and allow off-road driving and night drives, which the national reserve does not. In August that is the difference between watching a crossing and watching forty other vehicles watch a crossing.

What can go wrong

Wet season

The long rains; black-cotton soil tracks become impassable.Mar · Apr · May · Nov

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Mara River crossings (Jul–Oct, most concentrated in late July and August)
  • Big-cat viewing at its best in the dry months (Jul–Oct)
  • Short rains and the return south (Nov)

Walks

  • Guided walking safaris in the Mara North and Naboisho conservancies — inside the reserve, with an armed ranger
  • Oloololo Escarpment — the wall above the western Mara, with the plains laid out below
  • Maasai-guided village and bush walks, arranged through conservancy camps

Walking is mostly a conservancy privilege here. Inside the national reserve a walk needs an armed ranger, which is worth knowing before booking on the strength of a walking photo.
