City & Culture

Marrakech is at its best for city & culture in March to April and October to November. Good but not prime in February, May and December.

The short version

Marrakech bakes close to 38°C in July, so the city works in spring and autumn. The High Atlas is a short drive away and 1,300m up, and it is a separate card because it is a separate climate

When not to come

July and August for anything in Marrakech itself — sightseeing in that heat is punishing.

Busiest

October and November, March, plus European Christmas and New Year in the city

With children

The medina is intense — crowds, motorbikes, persistent touts — and tiring with small children. The Atlas valleys are the opposite and make a good counterweight.

Where to stay

A riad in the medina is the stay. If the mountains are part of the trip, two or three nights in an Imlil guesthouse is the combination that makes it work — trying to do the Atlas as a day trip wastes most of the day in a car.

What can go wrong

Extreme heat

Marrakech in midsummer regularly passes 45°C; the mountains ninety minutes away are the escape.Jul · Aug

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Ramadan — moves through the calendar; restaurant hours and the pace of the medina change substantially
