WildlifeHiking

Kruger & Sabi Sands is at its best for hiking in May to August. Good but not prime in September.

The short version

The dry season strips the bush back and concentrates animals at water — April to September is when you see things. The green season is better for birds and newborns and much harder for spotting

What the walking is like

Guided only, on foot with an armed ranger. Booked well ahead, and the point is the animals, not the distance.

When not to come

December–January if the point is seeing animals. Thick green bush and peak South African holiday crowds. Malaria risk runs from November, and peaks later than most people expect — in April and May.

Busiest

December–January and July South African school holidays

With children

Many private lodges set a minimum age for game drives — often six or twelve. SANParks self-drive has no age limit and is the family route in.

Where to stay

SANParks rest camps inside the national park cost a fraction of the private Sabi Sands lodges next door. What the extra buys is off-road driving, which the park does not allow — that, not the beds, is the real difference. Night drives run from the rest camps too.

What can go wrong

Wet season

Thick green bush hides the animals, and this is also the highest malaria risk of the year.Jan · Feb · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Dry-season game viewing peak (Jun–Sep)
  • Impala lambing and newborns (Nov–Dec)
  • Migrant birding at its best (November and February)

Walks

  • SANParks guided wilderness trails — multi-day, on foot, armed guide, booked well ahead
  • Bushman and Wolhuter trails in the southern section
  • Lebombo eco-trail — several days overland along the Mozambique border

Walking here is guided and booked, never casual. The point is being on foot among animals, not covering ground.
