Hiking

The High Atlas is at its best for hiking in April to May and September to October. Good but not prime in June, July, August and November.

The short version

Imlil sits about 1,300m above Marrakech and ninety minutes away, and it is pleasant in the months the city is punishing. Spring and autumn are the best of it; summer works if you go straight up and stay there

What the walking is like

Village-to-village valley walking, easy and guided by custom. Toubkal is a two-day climb and a guide is compulsory.

When not to come

Expecting to walk Toubkal in winter — from December to March it is a mountaineering route, not a walk. And approaching in midsummer from the city side: the low approach is brutal.

Busiest

The summer trekking season, and the European school holidays either side of it

With children

The valleys are gentle and the village-to-village walking suits children. Toubkal does not.

Where to stay

Two or three nights in an Imlil guesthouse. Trying to do the Atlas as a day trip from Marrakech wastes most of the day in a car.

What can go wrong

Flash floods

High Atlas valleys flood in winter storms and mountain roads wash out.Jan · Feb · Dec

Avalanche risk

Snow on the tops from December to March. Toubkal becomes a mountaineering route, not a walk, and needs winter skills rather than a guide alone.Jan · Feb · Mar · Dec

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Rose Festival, Kelaat M’Gouna (May)
  • Winter snow on the Atlas (Dec–Mar) — Toubkal becomes a mountaineering route, not a walk

Walks

  • North Africa’s highest peak, two days from Imlil, with a guide compulsory and the refuges booked ahead in season
  • Imlil valley circuits — day walks between Berber villages with no altitude problem
  • Aït Bouguemez — gentle village-to-village walking in the “happy valley”, and no altitude to speak of

Guides are effectively mandatory on Toubkal and genuinely useful elsewhere — the village-to-village routes are not signposted and the mule tracks braid.
