The heel of Italy has two coasts a half-hour apart — both mixed rock and sand, with the Ionian side the rockier of the two, and the wind usually makes one calm when the other is not
August if you want the trulli towns to yourself — though this is also when the Salento is most alive, so it depends what you came for.

Genuinely easy. The Ionian beaches shelve gently and stay shallow a long way out, which is unusual in Italy and the reason Italian families come here.
A masseria — a fortified farmhouse converted to rooms — is the local form and costs less inland than anything on the water. Ostuni and Locorotondo put you between both coasts; Otranto and Gallipoli put you on one.
