The short version

The season is late March to early November. The villas and gardens close in the second week of November and most of the lakeside outside the main towns shuts until mid-March

What the walking is like

Walks above the lake villages, climbing from the ferry dock. No guide needed on the marked paths.

When not to come

Late October to mid-March unless a quiet city break is what you actually want. The ferries drop to a winter timetable at the start of November with early last departures, and the small western-shore villages wind down. The villas are less absolute than that suggests — Balbianello runs 10am–5pm right through November, then is shut in December and January except on a few named days.

Busiest

July and August, and any warm weekend

With children

Ferries and villa gardens suit children well, but the villages are steep and full of steps — hard going with a pushchair.

Where to stay

Bellagio and Varenna are the postcards and are priced as such. Menaggio and Lecco stay open year-round for less, and Como itself is a city of 80,000 with proper restaurants and a train to Milan.

Dates that matter

  • Season late March to early November
  • Balbianello runs 10am–5pm through November, then is shut in December and January except on a short list of named days
  • Ferry winter timetable (Nov–Mar) — fewer stops, early final departures

Walks

  • Greenway del Lago di Como — village to village on the old lakeside path
  • Monte Baldo above Malcesine on Garda — cable car up, ridge walk along
  • Sentiero del Viandante — the old mule track above the eastern shore

Both lakes have mountains rising straight out of the water, so almost every village has a path climbing away from its ferry dock.
