Dalmatian Coast is at its best for hiking in May to June and September to October. Good but not prime in April and November. Crowds peak in August and bottom out in January.

Crowds

Swipe the table sideways for the rest of the year.

primegoodpossibleoff-seasoncrowds, on this place’s own scale

The short version

The clearest case on the site of one place needing different months for different trips. The swimming is best in July and August; the hiking above it is genuinely unpleasant then, and comes into its own in May and October when the sea has gone cool

What the walking is like

Half-day climbs straight up from the sea. Shade and water matter more than distance.

When not to come

August if you want to do anything but swim. Ferry queues and the old towns at their most crowded — the coast is still lovely and everything else is a chore.

Busiest

Mid-July to late August, and the Ultra Europe weekend in Split in early July

With children

Most Dalmatian beaches are pebble rather than sand, which small children mind and water shoes fix. Island hopping depends on ferry timetables that thin out sharply outside summer.

Where to stay

Basing on an island rather than in Split changes the trip — Hvar and Korčula are calmer and better for wine, but tie you to ferry times. Split is the right base only if you actually want the city.

Dates that matter

  • Split Summer Festival (summer) — theatre and opera in the old town
  • Ultra Europe, Split (Jul) — fills the city and the ferries for a long weekend
  • Grape harvest across Pēlješac and Hvar (Sep)

Walks

  • Marjan Hill above Split — an hour from the old town, pine shade, and the whole bay below
  • Biokovo above Makarska — serious ascent straight off the coast, with a glass skywalk at the top
  • Paklenica in the Velebit — two limestone canyons and the best climbing and walking in the country

Everything here climbs away from the sea immediately, so shade and water matter more than distance. The Velebit range holds the long routes; the coastal hills are half-day walks with outsized views.
