Crowds

Swipe the table sideways for the rest of the year.

primegoodpossibleoff-seasoncrowds, on this place’s own scale

The short version

Big enough to have a mountain range with snow on it in May while the south coast is swimming — and the Samaria Gorge, the island’s best walk, is a summer-season walk that closes at short notice in bad weather

What the walking is like

Gorge descents and mountain day walks. No guide needed; Samaria has wardens and opens in May, with the exact date set each year.

When not to come

The north-coast strip from Malia to Hersonissos if you want Crete rather than a resort. The south and west of the island are a different country.

Busiest

July and August, concentrated on the north coast

With children

Straightforward on the north coast. The good beaches — Elafonisi, Balos, Preveli — are a long winding drive or a boat ride away, Balos genuinely rough, and Samaria is a 16km descent with no way to stop halfway.

Where to stay

Chania and Rethymno old towns are the good bases and are priced fairly. The south coast — Loutro, Paleochora, Plakias — is cheaper, quieter, and warm enough to swim earlier and later in the year than the north.

What can go wrong

Extreme heat

The Samaria Gorge closes in high heat as well as after rain.Jul · Aug

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Orthodox Easter — date moves, and it is the most atmospheric weekend of the Cretan year
  • Samaria Gorge season (May–Oct)
  • Raki distilling in the mountain villages (Oct–Dec)

Walks

  • Samaria Gorge — 16km downhill through a gorge 500m deep at the narrows, one way, open May to October
  • Imbros Gorge — the short version, about three hours and open far longer in the year
  • Mount Ida (Psiloritis) — the island’s highest point, a long day from the Nida plateau

Samaria is a one-way walk that ends at a village reachable only by boat, so the ferry time sets your day. It closes entirely outside the season and after heavy rain, and rockfall closures happen without much notice.
