The short version

The Calanques between Marseille and Cassis are the best thing on this coast and they close in summer — access is restricted or banned on high fire-risk days from June to September, and the level is published at 6pm the day before

What the walking is like

Coastal paths and steep limestone descents. No guide needed, but summer access is regulated.

When not to come

Planning a Calanques walk between June and September without checking the previous evening’s fire-risk ruling. Entire massifs close, and the rule is not negotiable — at red the hills are open 6am to 11am only.

Busiest

July and August, August highest, plus the Cannes film festival in May and the Monaco Grand Prix in late spring

With children

The town beaches at Nice and Antibes are pebble and easy; the Calanques are a serious walk in and out with no water. Cannes and Monaco in event weeks are gridlocked.

Where to stay

Nice has the most normal prices on this coast, with the airport and the train line. Cannes, Antibes and Saint-Tropez are all better as day trips from it than as bases.

What can go wrong

Wildfire risk

Access to the Calanques is restricted or banned on high fire-risk days, decided each morning between June and September. Entire massifs close at dawn.Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Cannes Film Festival (May) — the coast’s most expensive fortnight
  • Monaco Grand Prix (late May)
  • Nice Carnival (Feb) and Jazz à Juan, Antibes (Jul)

Walks

  • Calanque d’En-Vau from Cassis — steep white limestone down to a fjord-like inlet, fire-risk restrictions apply
  • Cap d’Antibes coastal path — flat, about five kilometres around the headland, open year-round
  • Sentier du Littoral, Saint-Tropez peninsula — beaches and headlands, walkable in sections

June to September the préfecture publishes the next day’s fire-risk access around 6pm the evening before, and it is enforced. Spring and autumn have no such restriction and much better walking temperatures.
