A mountain range in the sea — beaches as good as Sardinia’s, and above them the GR20, widely called the hardest waymarked trek in Europe, with a staffed refuge season of about four and a half months and booking compulsory
Day walks and hut-to-hut routes, with one serious high-mountain traverse that needs real experience.
The GR20 outside mid-May to early October. Snow lies on the high stages into June and an ice axe is advised — and August on the beaches means booking ferries months ahead.
August, when French mainland holidays peak and ferries book out
The beaches are excellent and the mountain interior is not a family proposition at all. Roads are slow, narrow and switchbacked; distances take twice as long as they look.
Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio in the south are the expensive end. Calvi and the Balagne in the north-west are cheaper with equally good water, and Corte in the middle is the base for the mountains and costs very little.

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.
The GR20 is genuinely hard — scrambling, chains and long days — and people underestimate it every year. The Mare a Mare and Mare e Monti routes are the same island at a third of the difficulty.
