Bavarian Alps is at its best for city & culture in September and December. Good but not prime in June, July, August and October. Crowds peak in June and bottom out in October.

Crowds

The short version

Hiking runs late June to September. Skiing lasts far longer than the valley suggests: the Zugspitze glacier is scheduled 27 November to 2 May, so early April is mid-season. November is the real gap — the Zugspitze shuts for maintenance for three weeks of it.

What the walking is like

Day walks with lift access and a hut network for longer routes. No guide needed.

When not to come

November until the glacier opens at the end of the month — grey, damp, short-dayed, and the Zugspitze shut for maintenance for three weeks of it. Not a dead month otherwise: the glacier skis to early May and the Partnach Gorge runs year-round.

Busiest

June through August — note Bavaria’s own school holidays run August into mid-September, later than most of Europe — and the December Christmas markets

With children

Minimal — lakes, cable cars and castles are made for it. The Partnachklamm gorge is narrow, wet and slippery in places.

Where to stay

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the transport hub and the busiest of the bases. Mittenwald and the villages around Berchtesgaden cost less and sit closer to the trailheads.

Dates that matter

  • Ski season December – March/early April
  • Almabtrieb (September) — decorated cattle driven down from the summer pastures, with village celebrations
  • Christmas markets (December)

Walks

  • Zugspitze — Germany’s highest point, by cable car or a long two-day walk up
  • Partnachklamm gorge — a dramatic hour from Garmisch, open year-round
  • Königssee to Obersee — boat in across the fjord-like lake, walk the far end

The Alpine trail network runs unbroken into Austria from here, and the hut system makes multi-day walking straightforward.
