Valle Nevado & the Chilean Andes is at its best for skiing in July to August. Good but not prime in June and September. Crowds peak in August and bottom out in October.

Ninety minutes from Santiago on a road with forty numbered switchbacks, chains compulsory, and high enough that the season opens reliably in late June. Two linked areas, with a third next door on its own ticket — Valle Nevado and La Parva on one pass — El Colorado needs its own
October onward — the season ends in early October and the road becomes a dead end to closed lifts. Early June, when the lifts are usually not yet running.

The access road is genuinely alarming with children in the car, and the altitude at the top is over 3,600m. In winter it is legally one-way by time of day — uphill 8am to 2pm, downhill 2pm to 8pm, snow chains required — so staying up the mountain is not just convenience, it is the only way to move when you want to.
Staying on the mountain costs more and removes the road from your day twice. Farellones, lower down, is cheaper and still above the switchbacks.
