Puerto Rico is at its best for lakes & coastline in December to April. Good but not prime in May, June and July.

No reliable monthly crowd data for this destination — the proxy used elsewhere did not pass its checks here, so nothing is shown rather than a guess.

The short version

The one Caribbean island where you can walk a rainforest, surf, and sleep in a five-hundred-year-old city in the same trip — and El Yunque needs no reservation on four of its roads

What the walking is like

Humid rainforest trails, slippery rather than steep. No guide needed.

When not to come

Mid-August to mid-October — the storm peak. In El Yunque, La Mina and Big Tree have been closed for construction since 2023. The rainforest is wet year-round; that is the point of it.

Busiest

February and March, and again in July — two peaks of about the same size. The San Sebastián street festival fills a long weekend in January

With children

Easy by Caribbean standards — US infrastructure, short drives, and calm water on the north-east coast. El Yunque trails are humid and slippery rather than hard.

Where to stay

Old San Juan is the atmospheric base and the noisy one. Condado and Ocean Park are calmer with real beaches, and the east coast near Fajardo puts El Yunque and the bio bay within half an hour.

What can go wrong

Hurricane season

September is the peak. María in 2017 is within living memory here and the island still plans around the season.Jun · Jul · Aug · Sep · Oct

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, Old San Juan (mid-Jan) — the island’s biggest street festival
  • Hurricane season (1 Jun–30 Nov), highest risk Sep–Oct
  • Bioluminescent bay viewing, best on moonless nights year round

Walks

  • El Yunque — Mount Britton, the only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system
  • Guánica dry forest — the opposite climate, an hour and a half away on the south coast
  • Cueva Ventana — an hour’s walk to a cave window over the Río Grande de Arecibo valley, paid guided entry

El Yunque runs a reservation system for vehicle entry in peak periods, and trails close after storms — check before driving up.
