Hiking

El Chaltén & Fitz Roy is at its best for hiking in March to April and November. Good but not prime in January, February and December. Crowds peak in December and bottom out in June.

The short version

Wind is the variable here: very strong from November to February, easing in March, and calmest from June to August — when snow and ice can close sections of the trails

What the walking is like

Day walks from the village into Los Glaciares National Park. In winter some trails need prior registration and technical gear.

When not to come

Giving Fitz Roy a single day. Cloud and wind hide it often; the local advice is to stay two or three nights, because it almost always appears. Start early — the morning is the calmest time of day.

Busiest

December to March, the busiest part of the season

With children

It is colder and windier on the trails than in the village, and the weather can change several times in a day. Layers and a windproof shell are not optional.

Where to stay

Outside October–April, check which lodgings are open before you go — some close for the winter, though the buses from El Calafate run daily all year.

What can go wrong

Winter storms

Snow and ice can close sections of the trails. July is the snowiest month.Jun · Jul · Aug

Kept out of the score on purpose. Averaging a rare catastrophe into a monthly number would tell you something false; the warning is the honest form.

Dates that matter

  • Trekking season October–April; over the southern winter most tours stop and some lodgings close
  • Buses from El Calafate run every day of the year

Walks

  • Laguna de los Tres — the classic Fitz Roy viewpoint
  • Laguna Torre — the lake below Cerro Torre

Check the wind and gust forecast and the trail report at the National Park Visitor Center before heading out.

Know before you book

Most places have one or two months that are genuinely better — and a booking moment that comes a lot earlier than the trip. I’ll write when one of those is coming up. No schedule, no filler.
