Chile’s Carmenère valley, two hours from Santiago, with harvest from March — the southern-hemisphere mirror of Bordeaux. Big estates built for visitors, and wine trains to some of them that are exactly as touristic as they sound and quite good anyway
May through August — winter here is grey, wet and the vines are bare. Opening hours thin out and some estates keep winter-only appointments.

Estates are large and set up for tour groups, with restaurants and grounds. A car is essential; the valley is spread out.
Santa Cruz is the base and has the hotels and the museum. Staying on an estate costs more and removes the drive, which matters after a day of tasting.
