Australia’s ski season is short, warm and heavily dependent on snowmaking — The June long weekend to early October, or nothing. In summer the same chairlift puts you within a couple of hours’ walk of the highest point on the mainland

June, and anything after the second week of September — Thredbo closes in mid-September, and the season opens at the June long weekend. Check conditions before committing rather than booking on the calendar.
July and August weekends, when Sydney and Melbourne both drive up — snow chains are compulsory through the season
Good beginner terrain and a well-run ski school, but the drive from either city is five to six hours and the village is small and expensive in season.
Jindabyne, half an hour down the hill, is markedly cheaper than the village and where most people actually stay.
The alpine summer here is short and spectacular, with wildflowers in January. Weather turns fast on the Main Range even in midsummer.
